About me

At school I was given a reporter’s pad and encouraged to write my own stories – I was hooked. I developed an ambition to be a war correspondent but fortunately lacked the courage and conviction to follow that dream.

My main passion aside from my family is football. My love and appreciation of the game is something I have inherited from my father and hope to pass onto my own son.  I have been an avid follower of the “Beautiful Game” since Mexico ’86 when sport taught me, a 7 year-old boy at the time, some valuable lessons in life, not least that sometimes people do bad things. Very bad things.

My  interest in writing flourished when I began constructing my own match reports, sometimes on entirely fictional games like Queens Park Rangers’ mid-90s string of FA Cup victories. I have always been more interested in the the tribal aspect as I see it; the experience and the stories that come from following sport rather than anything tactical. The sights, the sounds, the smells, the feeling of excitement and anticipation at not knowing what might happen next. The pressure of the clock and the relief and agony at the final whistle.

Separate to sporting pursuits, I have a good level of general knowledge and have opinions on everything. Music, film, technology, beer and TV are all of great interest to me.

Of all my interests, the unifying factor between them is my passion for people and their stories.

  1. Hi Kieran,
Would you be interested in guest blogging for my Mental Health in Football?
Perhaps your thoughts, findings and experience following the game?

    Thanks
